Zygon (US) — Purification in Dark Calamity — 2024 EP
The debut of this act from Illinois.
At its core, this record adheres to a more old-school black metal concept, with raw and intense riffs that capture the essence of the genre's early days. However, Zygon does not limit itself to traditional boundaries, there are skilful transitions into segments that incorporate black‘n roll characteristics, infusing a catchy and rhythmic groove that adds a new dimension to their sound.
Moreover, the “Purification in Dark Calamity” does not shy away from exploring other metal genres. Elements of melodic death metal and even classic heavy metal make their presence felt, demonstrating its versatility and willingness to experiment. These influences are woven seamlessly into the tracks, creating a rich tapestry of sound that keeps the listener engaged.
One of the standout aspects of “Purification in Dark Calamity” is the inclusion of unique musical elements that set it apart from typical black metal releases. The third track surprises with a dungeon synth section, providing a haunting and atmospheric interlude that enhances the overall mood. Additionally, the fifth track features a waltz, an unexpected but interesting way to further increase the harmonious intake but also forced intermission of the chaos from metal.
This culminates in the final track, which leans more heavily into the heavy metal side of Zygon's influences. This closing piece manages to blend heavy metal and black metal in a harmonious and satisfying conclusion.

Solid but not as good as their sophomore effort. The atmosphere is still here in spades but the vocals are just not as wild as they used to be and they’re way too buried in the mix
Really? I was still in doubt went i was writing, so I had to stop and listen to the second one again, but forme the songwriting in this last one seems more intricate. Obviously it all depends on your aesthetical preferences, but as neutral as I can be, it seems to be a more exquisite take. as for the vocals forme, this record seems to be a bit higher in the mix, actually. It might depende on which track we compare, but at least I finished feeling that.

Never thought of connecting the two, but perhaps the same person? Mahpiya Luta and 'Samurai' on the ASRAR label sound very similar, almost like they're from the same guy.
@@dungcheeseMORK999 Agreed, I think some of the smaller projects in BM are occasionally interconnected in some ways. Either a member from one band plays in another and carries over some of the style, or in the case of one man bands they just rebrand with a different theme and focus. Either way its cool to see the same artist try different aesthetics

I was listening to Voces Mysticae and Defacement on my break at work today, and I've been on a bit of an appreciation binge of all the odd and outré metal in my bandcamp collection for a few weeks now. I'm happy to add this gem to that pantheon of gloriously weird and enigmatic metal records.
